To start, I purchased this product from another vendor for much less than amazon. Search and you shall find.
As to why I purchased a Briggs & Stratton. A neighbor of mine had a Generac and it failed him during the Sandy hurricane. It lasted him less than a day. I need to put my faith and family well being in a company that has a four year warranty rather than a one year from the competition. That to me shows they have faith in their own product. Plus after speaking to their tech support I had even more confidence in their company. (No Accent)

To my review:

I was able to save money by doing most of the work myself. I laid the gravel and poured the cement. I ran the black pipe and hook-up to the city gas line. I had all the electrical work done by a professional which cost me $600. Total cost for materials and install came to $4500. That included the 200 AMP Auto-Transfer switch.

After the install we turned the generator on and let it do it's prep cycle. You have to select a time for it to do it's weekly maintenance but that's no big deal it only last 20 minutes or so.
It's loud. Loud enough that even though we have it on the side of the house where the garage should shield us from the noise, we still heard it inside. I can only imagine my neighbors looks if and when there is another blackout.

After it cycled though it's prep we decided to test the automatic transfer switch and see how much of the home it could power before straining the unit. We flipped the main breaker to off, the unit turned on 20 seconds later and then less than a minute after that the transfer switch turned over to the generator and the house went live again.Read more

All Power America APG3014 2,000 Watt 4-Stroke Gas Powered Portable Generator

The All-Power America APG3014 generator with 3 Hp, JF156 engine performs OK for the price but the output power is less than advertised.

Using accurate meters, an oscilloscope, and some resistive loads, I measured several output factors:

1.) voltage was 122.5 Volts.

2). reliable current was only 10 Amps (1225 watts) -- 11 Amps (1348 watts) caused the engine to slow way down and 12 Amps (1470 watts) caused the engine to stop.

3.) waveform was sinusoidal without anything plugged in but turned somewhat triangular under load.

4.) frequency was 60 Hz except while the engine throttle was adjusting to different appliance loads.

When looking at the manufacturer (Jiangsu Jiangdong Group) specifications web page for their JD 1500 unit, I noticed that they rate their JF156 engine, 60 Hz unit at only 1.3 kVA (1300 watts -- not 1400 watts as advertised for the All-Power America version and with a peak output of 1.5 kVA (1500 watts -- not the 2000 watts as advertised for the All-Power America version.

My conclusion is that the JF156, 3 Hp engine is undersized and can't produce advertised output. I see that the APG3010 All-Power America 2000 watt unit uses a 4 HP engine All Power America APG3010 2,000 Watt 4 HP OHV 4-Cycle Gas Powered Portable Generator.

We have had a number of short-term electric power outages due to weather conditions such as wind, ice, and snow causing trees and limbs to fall into the power lines. I wanted a small, inexpensive generator to power a few appliances and lights during infrequent, short-term outages.Read more

The wifey wanted something in the face of Hurricane Earl (which thankfully did nothing more than give us about a 1/2" of rain in these parts), so after researching what was available at the home stores and seeing the number of positive reviews of the DuroMax 4400, I decided to buy. I went for this slightly larger model primarily for the "automatic idle control", and the slightly higher output of the engine.

After unpacking (and while the box had heavy foam to protect the generator, the tape on the box flaps didn't survive FedEx so it arrived open) I put it together in about 10 minutes, then discovered I needed to go out and get a grounding rod. (There seems to be some debate about this online, but it seemed to make sense for safety reasons). Fortunately cheap at home depot (under $10.) and surprisingly easy to install (got about 6' in by hand, then pounded in the rest with a small sledge).

Following the directions, I added oil (and you WILL need a funnel and you SHOULD pay attention to the amount: it's hard to do it by sight), gas and connected the battery. Turned right over and didn't start. Ah, the choke is "open" or "closed" in the manual, while "on" or "off" given the labeling on the device. So after switching it to "on", it started right up, off the battery (despite warnings I'd need to pull start it). After running a few minutes and turning "off" the choke (open), I connected up a few loads, and it ran them just fine. A 1800 watt heater did cause the engine to labor very slightly, but of course I was using only one "arm" of the generator, so presumably I could have hooked up another 1800 watt load to the other 20A 120V outlet without much additional load.

All in all, it seems to have been a good buy; I'm pleased with the quality, and even more so with the quality for the money - other generators of this caliber run $800 and up.

Purchased this generator locally here in CT in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

No power for 5 days, this genset is running 15 hours per day with no issue whatsoever.

I have it back-fed into my breaker panel, powering well pump, refridgerators, lights, microwave, garage door openers, dsl modem, wifi and complete home network.

I've been getting 14 hours of run time from a single tank of gas, call it 10 gallons. More than I thought possible. Last night, ran a bunch of appliances, trying to max the genset out, and after 5 hours, had used only 2.5 gallons of gas.

The genset is noisy, but I've got behind a pool shed, so it doesn't bother us much at all.

Highly recommended. Make sure to buy the NEMA 30 Amp plug, part number NEMA 14L 30P when you order this so you can plug directly in to the 220v side of the generator.

Update. Today is 11/12/11. Here in CT, we're just coming off of an 8 day power outage as a result of a large snowstorm. This time we really needed power in order to run the heat in our house, as it was 30 degrees for several days. Luckily we had this generator fueled up and ready to go after buying it for Irene.

It ran flawlessly 24 hours / day for 8 days. It consistently ran between 12 and 14 hours on a full fuel tank of 8 gallons. I'm happy to say we had enough extra juice to run a 250' extension cord to our neighbors house for lights and a small heater. I now have 250 hours on the clock.

I run this generator in our small 10'x12' pool shed, and have fabricated an exhaust pipe extension to run the exhaust out of the building.

Highly recommended for cheap (buy noisy) back-up power
